Before you book: check these first
- 1Is your dog's Leptospirosis vaccination course complete and within 12 months? (This is the most common timing problem)
- 2Have you applied for the Thailand import permit? (Valid 60 days, required before travel)
- 3Have you confirmed cargo space with your airline? (Book separately from your own ticket)
- 4Has your vet confirmed they can issue an APHA-endorsed export health certificate?

Which airlines fly this route with pets
No commercial airline currently allows pets in the cabin on UK to Thailand routes. All dogs travel as checked baggage in the climate-controlled hold, or as manifest cargo booked separately from your own ticket.
Cargo holds have a limited number of live animal spaces per flight. Confirm availability first.
Import requirements for Thailand
Required before travel. Apply online through Thailand's Department of Livestock Development or through the Animal Quarantine Station at your destination airport. Valid for 60 days. Apply at least four weeks before travel.
ISO 11784/11785 compliant 15-digit chip. Must be implanted before any vaccinations are recorded on the health certificate.
Required if your dog has not been continuously resident in the UK for at least six months. Given at least 21 days before departure and not more than 12 months before arrival.
Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, and Leptospirosis. The Leptospirosis primary course: second vaccination must be at least 21 days before export. Alternatively, a Leptospirosis blood test within 30 days of export sent to the Veterinary Laboratories Agency at Weybridge. A negative result satisfies the requirement.
Deworming and external parasite treatment (ticks, fleas, tapeworms, heartworms) required within seven days of travel. Your vet records this on the health certificate.
Issued by a UK government-authorised official veterinarian within seven to ten days of departure. Must come from an APHA-approved vet and be endorsed by APHA before travel.
This is the part most people get wrong. A reviewed plan makes sure you don't.
The part most people get wrong
If your dog has never been vaccinated for Leptospirosis, the primary course requires two injections given exactly four weeks apart. The second injection must be at least 21 days before export. This means starting at least seven to eight weeks before travel, before any other documentation. Many UK vets are not familiar with the Thai export health certificate. Use a vet with international export experience, or work through a licensed pet transport agent.
This is the step most people miss. A reviewed plan makes sure you don't.
Timeline: how far in advance to start
Begin Leptospirosis vaccination course if not already current. Confirm microchip is ISO-compliant.
Apply for Thailand import permit. Source an APHA-approved vet for the export health certificate.
Confirm cargo space with your airline. Book pet cargo separately from your ticket.
Export health certificate issued by APHA-approved vet. APHA endorsement. Final vet check.

Frequently asked questions
No. No commercial airline allows pets in the cabin on this route. All dogs travel as cargo.
No quarantine on arrival if all documents are correct. If anything is missing, your dog enters government quarantine at your expense until the issue is resolved.
Yes, if your airline accepts pets on that route and your dog stays on the aircraft during the transit. Confirm the transit handling with your airline before booking. Dogs must not leave the airport precinct during transit.
Thailand does not ban snub-nosed breeds by law, but British Airways, Thai Airways, and several other carriers restrict or refuse brachycephalic dogs in cargo. Check breed acceptance with your specific airline before anything else.
You've read the general rules. Your airline, your dog's breed, your departure airport, and your specific Leptospirosis history may change the timeline significantly. A personal plan covers your exact situation. $24, human-reviewed before delivery.
