Emirates and Etihad fly out of the same country, serve many of the same routes, and are often compared on price and service. For pet travel, they are not comparable at all. The policies are structurally different, and the right choice depends almost entirely on what your pet needs.

Emirates: cargo only, no cabin exception
Emirates does not allow regular pets in the cabin on any route. Small dogs that would travel under the seat on a European carrier cannot do so on Emirates, regardless of weight or size.
The only cabin exceptions are certified service dogs on selected routes, and falcons, which are permitted on certain flights primarily between Dubai and Pakistan.
For pet owners, this means every dog and cat travels as cargo or, on some routes departing Dubai, as checked excess baggage. Pets whose final destination is Dubai must enter as manifest cargo due to UAE government regulations. They cannot arrive as checked baggage even on carriers that would otherwise allow it.
For Dubai transits, a Pet Lounge at the airport allows pets to be checked by a vet if the layover is long enough. Cargo pet transport is suspended when ground temperatures exceed certain thresholds, relevant for summer travel through Dubai.

Etihad: cabin available, at a price
Etihad allows small cats and dogs in the cabin on flights to and from Abu Dhabi. The weight limit is 8 kg including the carrier. The carrier must fit under the seat in front of you.
The cabin option is only available on Etihad-operated flights with Abu Dhabi as the origin or destination. If your itinerary involves a partner airline for any segment, the cabin option does not carry over.
The fee for cabin pet travel on Etihad has changed multiple times. As of early 2026 there was a promotional rate of $399 for reservations made before the end of May 2026. The standard rate is around $1,500 per segment. Always verify the current fee directly with Etihad before planning around it.
Booking requires a form submitted at least seven days before departure. All documents must be emailed at least 72 hours before departure. If not received in time, the pet booking will not be approved.
Breed restrictions: both airlines apply them
Both Emirates and Etihad restrict brachycephalic breeds (Pugs, Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Persian cats, and similar) due to respiratory risks during air travel.
The UAE also has its own breed ban list, which includes Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and Doberman Pinschers. These breeds cannot enter the UAE regardless of airline.
Which one is actually better?
If your pet is small enough to fit under the seat (under 8 kg with carrier) and you are flying to or from Abu Dhabi, Etihad gives you the option to keep your pet with you. That is a meaningful advantage for owners of small dogs and cats.
If your pet is larger, if you are flying through Dubai rather than Abu Dhabi, or if the cabin fee is a deciding factor, cargo travel on either airline is structurally similar. Emirates has a more extensive global network.
Neither airline is the right choice for the cheapest or simplest pet travel. For that, European carriers like Lufthansa, KLM, or Turkish Airlines offer cabin options at significantly lower fees.
